****THE BIG GIVE****
Host: The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID)
Start Time: Monday, 07 December 2009 at 10:00
End Time: Friday, 11 December 2009 at 23:55
Location: Worldwide
We are delighted to announce that FSID has been chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the 2009 Big
Give MillionMatch Challenge!
This programme will match all donations made to FSID at www.theBigGive.org.uk between 7th and 11th
December pound for pound - a fantastic opportunity to raise much needed funds for FSID!
The money raised will be used to fund new genetic cardiac research which could lead to the UK’s
first ever screening programme to identify babies at risk of cot death. They could then be offered
preventative treatment.
If you are considering making a gift to FSID this autumn then please make a note to do so online at
www.theBigGive.org.uk between 7th and 11th December. Please also pass the word on, invite your
friends and family to this event, and let anyone who you think would like to support us know about
this wonderful opportunity.
Donations big or small will make a big difference. Thank you.

****NEW RESEARCH****
More than half of cot deaths happen when a baby is sleeping with a parent, a study has revealed.
Researchers said this could be linked to the baby's parent having been drinking or taking drugs.
Despite a dramatic drop in the rate of cot death in the UK since the early 1990s, experts are
advising parents to avoid dangerous co-sleeping arrangements.
The study was led by a team of researchers at Bristol and Warwick universities.
They studied all unexpected infant deaths - aged from birth to two years old - in the south west of
England from January 2003 to December 2006.
The parents were interviewed shortly after the death and information was collected on alcohol and
drug use.
A detailed investigation of the scene and circumstances of death was also conducted by trained
professionals.
Of the 80 cot deaths analysed, more than half (54%) occurred while co-sleeping compared to one-fifth
(20%) co-sleeping rate among both control groups.
Much of this risk may be explained by the combination of parental alcohol or drug use prior to
co-sleeping (31% compared with 3% random controls), and the high proportion of co-sleeping deaths on
a sofa (17% compared with 1% random controls), say the authors.
A fifth of cot death infants were found with a pillow and a quarter were swaddled, suggesting
potentially new risk factors emerging.
Lead author Professor Peter Fleming, Professor of Infant Health and Development Physiology at
Bristol University, said: "It is really important that parents should not fall asleep with their
baby on a sofa as it is very, very dangerous."
Please feel free to add the SIDS page to your garden and light candles for all the babies taken away
by SIDS ~ ''the silent killer'' please pray for all the babies and young children that have already
been taken away by this sad cause of death, which in many cases, like our own, leaves no answers to
why.

Fans and cot death
6 October 2008
Statement from the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths on ‘Use of a Fan During Sleep and the
Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome’.
FSID urges great caution before parents rush out to aim a fan at their sleeping infants.
It is important to note that the use of a fan in this study had no effect on cot death risk when
parents followed the Reduce the Risk messages, eg slept their baby on the back, gave them a dummy,
prevented the bedclothes from covering the baby’s head, made sure the room wasn’t too hot. Only
when parents failed to follow the reduce the risk messages, a practice which FSID would not
encourage, did the fan have an effect.
It should be noted that opening a window, in a warm room, was almost as effective as using a fan.
In all, the message of the current study reinforces the importance, long publicised, of making sure
that the room where the baby sleeps is not too hot: 16-20oC is about right.

Advice for parents to reduce the risk of cot death:
• Cut smoking in pregnancy – fathers too! And don’t let anyone smoke in the same room as your
baby.
• Place your baby on the back to sleep (and not on the front or side).
• Do not let your baby get too hot, and keep your baby’s head uncovered.
• Place your baby with their feet to the foot of the cot, to prevent them wriggling down under the
covers.
• Never sleep with your baby on a sofa or armchair.
• The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a crib or cot in a room with you for the first six
months.
• It’s especially dangerous for your baby to sleep in your bed
if you (or your partner):
• are a smoker, even if you never smoke in bed or at home
• have been drinking alcohol
• take medication or drugs that make you drowsy
• feel very tired;
or if your baby:
• was born before 37 weeks
• weighed less than 2.5kg or 5½ lbs at birth
• is less than three months old.
• Don’t forget, accidents can happen: you might roll over in your sleep and suffocate your baby;
or your baby could get caught between the wall and the bed, or could roll out of an adult bed and be
injured.
• Settling your baby to sleep (day and night) with a dummy can reduce the risk of cot death, even
if the dummy falls out while your baby is asleep.
• Breastfeed your baby. Establish breastfeeding before starting to use a dummy.
**PLEASE LIGHT A CANDLE FOR ALL THE BABIES AND CHLDREN TAKEN BY SIDS**
This page has been set up in remembrance to all the angel babies who have sadly lost their lifes to
cot death (SIDS)
Babies and young children are more likely to become victims of cot death then any other common
ilness or injury.
this is because at present researchers have no idea how cot death happens or why it only effects
certain babies or children, as a result they have no cure or any information on how to prevent a cot
death happening.
It dont matter if your rich or poor, cot death can take any child of any age. Being a family who
have experienced this tragedy (Alisha Marie ~ 2005 ~ 2006) we know how heartbreaking cot death can
be and the impact and strain it can leave on you.
Cot death affects every family member whever your the mum, dad, brother, sister, grandparent, auntie
or uncle.
The charity FOUNDATION FOR THE STUDY OF INFANT DEATH (FSID) looks into research into how and why cot
death happens.
Please support FSID as at present there are no real answers as to why or how cot death happens.
The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths is the UK's leading baby charity working to prevent
sudden deaths and promote infant health.

Cot death is a 'silent killer' it can take any child at any time.
Sadly we have to face facts: there will be other babies and children taken away by this terrible
cause of death before a cure can be found.
Cot death can also strike adults this is known as SADS (sudden adult death syndrome)
If you have been affected by SIDS or SADS in any way, it dosen't matter if your not the parent of
the lost child you could be a grandparent, Auntie, Uncle or even just a friend, please leave
messages to your children or photos of your children or share your experience of cot death if you
feel you need to talk to someone. Or just simply light a candle and pray for the children who have
already been taken away by cot death xxxx
Thank you for taking the time to read this page about cot death, please if you have a few spare
minutes please light a candle or leave a message.
Thank you to everyone who contributes to this page wherever its a few words or a few paragraphs, all
your support means alot and im sure all the angel babies and children are looking down from heaven
and will be very much appreciated also. with love and thanks xxxx
Also if you have a few spare minutes please visit our special angels page ~ Alisha Grebby ~ who was
also sadly taken away by cot death aged just 8 weeks xxxxxxxx

Private Pain
Private Pain
Look around the shops
And read behind the smiles
They cover up so much hurt
As they walk calmly up the aisles
A woman browsing the goods
That she will purchase in a while
Nothing more to see than
The beautiful lipstick smile
But beyond the lipstick
and the freshly painted smile
is a life devoid of happiness
and it has been for a while
For since that woman said goodbye
To her sweet angel girl
There hasn’t been a proper smile
Because she lost her world.
I lost my son at tenwks of age to cot death (s.i.d.s) on the 1st dec 2006.
